Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the milk, eggs, and melted butter.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or round cookie cutters to cut out the donuts and donut holes.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, frying a few at a time for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  8. Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain and cool slightly.
  9. You can dust them with powdered sugar or glaze them if desired.
